What drives the value of a work by Wassily Kandinsky

Oil paintings on canvas — Major oils from the Munich, Bauhaus and Paris phases are the summit of the market and are traded almost exclusively through specialist departments with full provenance research. Small oils on board or cardboard from the early Murnau landscape phase also command strong interest when documented.

Unique works on paper — Watercolours, gouaches and India-ink drawings, especially the geometric compositions with circles, grids and floating forms of the Bauhaus years, form a deep and active market. Signed and dated sheets with clear exhibition history are treated very differently from unsigned studies or sketchbook leaves.

Original prints in his lifetime — Woodcuts, lithographs and drypoints issued under his supervision, including the portfolios linked to the Blaue Reiter circle, the Bauhaus print portfolios and the 'Kleine Welten' series, are collected as autonomous works. Value depends heavily on whether the impression is a signed edition sheet or a later book or album printing.

Posthumous and estate impressions — Restrikes and posthumous editions pulled after his death, sometimes bearing an estate reference rather than a hand signature, trade at a fraction of lifetime impressions. They are legitimate objects but are catalogued separately and must be described as posthumous.

Reproductive prints and posters — Photomechanical reproductions, museum exhibition posters and decorative 'after Kandinsky' plates circulate in very large numbers and have essentially decorative value. They are the most common category submitted for valuation.

Kandinsky most often used a compact monogram, a capital K enclosed in or above a small triangle, placed discreetly in a lower corner, with the year frequently added alongside or on the reverse in his hand. On the back of canvases and on the verso of sheets he habitually wrote the title, the year and an inventory-style number keyed to his own handlist of works, a practice that is very useful for verification. His widow Nina Kandinsky administered the estate after his death, works passed to French and German public collections, and the artist's output is covered by long-established catalogues raisonnés for paintings, watercolours and prints which any serious attribution must reference.

• Offset or giclée reproductions of famous Bauhaus compositions are frequently framed and mistaken for gouaches, but a loupe shows a regular dot or inkjet pattern instead of brushed pigment sitting on the paper surface.
• Museum and gallery exhibition posters reproducing a Kandinsky image, sometimes with printed lettering trimmed off, are regularly taken for original lithographs; original prints show plate or block character and no halftone screen.
• Plates cut from the Blaue Reiter almanac, from Bauhaus publications or from the artist's own illustrated books are sold as standalone prints, recognisable by text or printing on the reverse and by trimmed edges.
• Hand-signed forgeries are common because the triangle monogram is easy to imitate, so a signature alone never authenticates a work without matching paper, medium, provenance and catalogue reference.

• Works from the Murnau and early abstract Munich phase and from the Bauhaus geometric years are the most sought after, while very late Paris biomorphic compositions and very early figurative or folk-inspired pieces are assessed more cautiously.
• Documented provenance matters unusually much for this artist because of wartime dispersals, the Nazi seizure of works classed as degenerate and the postwar handling of the estate, and any gap in the ownership chain weighs heavily.
• For prints, a hand-signed and numbered impression from the original edition, with full margins, outranks an unsigned album or book impression of the same image.
• Condition problems typical of the medium reduce value sharply: light-struck or faded watercolour pigments, browning and foxing on paper, and cracking or flaking on oils painted on cardboard supports.

• Photograph the lower corners in raking light and close up so the monogram, any date and the way the ink or paint sits on the surface can be examined.
• Photograph the entire reverse, including stretcher, backing board, frame, and any handwritten titles, inventory numbers, estate marks, gallery or exhibition labels and customs stamps.
• Note and photograph the margins and any edition numbering, blindstamp or watermark, together with the overall sheet and image dimensions measured without the frame.
