Unique paintings and large tarpaulins — Paintings in acrylic or enamel on canvas, vinyl tarpaulin or found supports from the 1980s form the top of the market, especially the grommeted tarpaulins and works with dense all-over linework. These are the pieces for which buyers demand exhibition history, firm provenance and confirmation by the recognised authentication channel.

Unique drawings on paper — Sumi ink and marker drawings on paper, including the early Subway Drawings in white chalk on black matte advertising paper, are traded as unique works and are strongly sought after. Subway chalk drawings are fragile and often mounted or framed early, and condition is scrutinised closely.

Signed lifetime print editions — Silkscreens and lithographs published during the artist's lifetime, such as the well-known portfolios and series issued through his own channels, are the core of the accessible market when hand-signed, dated and numbered in pencil. Complete portfolios kept together generally attract more interest than single sheets pulled from a set.

Objects, ceramics and editioned sculpture — Pop Shop merchandise, decorated ceramics, vases, badges, T-shirts, skateboards and small editioned or posthumously cast sculptures circulate widely and are valued mainly as design or memorabilia. Posthumous estate-authorised editions are accepted by the market but consistently sit well below lifetime signed works.

Posters and offset reproductions — Exhibition and event posters, including those for Pop Shop, anti-drug, literacy and AIDS-awareness campaigns, were printed in very large numbers and mostly carry a printed signature. They hold modest value unless hand-signed and dedicated, or unless the subject is historically significant.

Haring most often signed in marker or pencil with a compact 'K. Haring' plus a full date written as day, month and year, placed on the reverse of canvases and tarpaulins or in the lower margin of prints; hand-signed prints are normally pencil-signed, dated and numbered, sometimes with a blind stamp of the printer or publisher. He frequently added his radiant-baby figure or a small drawing as a dedication on posters, books and Pop Shop items, and such drawn dedications are considered original drawings in their own right. Works are today reviewed by the artist's estate-related authentication channel; earlier certificates issued by bodies that have since ceased operating are treated with caution, so documentation should always be assessed alongside provenance rather than on its own.

• Exhibition and campaign posters with a signature printed in the image are constantly mistaken for signed prints, so check under magnification whether the signature sits in the ink layer or is a separate pencil or marker mark on the surface.
• Offset reproductions of famous compositions reveal a regular dot matrix under a loupe, whereas genuine silkscreens show flat, opaque, slightly raised colour areas with crisp edges.
• Pop Shop and licensed merchandise reproduce authentic designs but are mass-produced goods, not editions, and should not be presented as original prints even when they bear printed signatures.
• Drawings on subway-type black paper and marker works on card are the most heavily faked category, since the materials are easy to obtain; hesitant, retraced or unevenly weighted outlines are a warning sign against Haring's fast, continuous, confident line.

• Works from the early to mid-1980s, and especially the subway period and the tarpaulins, are more sought after than late output made under illness or in a more decorative register.
• Iconic motifs such as the radiant baby, barking dog, dancing figures and the three-eyed face are far more marketable than atypical or purely abstract compositions.
• For prints, hand-signing, a low edition number, an intact complete portfolio and the presence of the publisher or printer blind stamp all raise value, while unsigned or posthumous impressions lower it.
• Condition weighs heavily: light-induced fading of the fluorescent and Day-Glo colours, foxing and mat burn on paper, flaking chalk on subway works, and cracking or creasing of vinyl tarpaulins all reduce value significantly.

• Photograph the signature, date and any edition or portfolio number at high resolution and in raking light, so that a pencil or marker mark can be distinguished from printed ink.
• Photograph the entire reverse, including stretcher, backing board, grommets, labels, gallery and framer stickers, inscriptions and any stamps, without removing the work from its frame.
• Record the exact sheet or canvas dimensions, note the paper type and any watermark or blind stamp, and gather all invoices, certificates, correspondence and exhibition or inheritance documents relating to the work.
